Superman Returns

Review by Mark with quotes from Tylor.

"It's a good thing I didn't go for the plot," said Tylor. "Otherwise, that movie would have sucked."

It's true. If you liked the first Superman movie, you'll probably like this one. I'm going to break my rule about spoilers, and let you know: it's the same plot. There are some clever moments, and some interesting subplots, but the main plot was Luthor's original plan to be rich by owning land.

I still enjoyed it. It wasn't the "must see" that my brother insisted it was, but it was still a good movie, as far as Superman movies go.

"Awesome effects," said Tylor. "It made me believe. My mother told me that when I watched those movies as a kid, she didn't watch the movie, she'd watch my face, because I was just so enthralled. It was the idea that a man could fly, that they could show me that and make me believe. I would love to have had a camera pointed at my face through this movie, because the special effects were just..." and this is where we came in.

It was a pretty formulaic Superman movie. He comes, he saves people, he saves more people, enter Luthor, Superman saves more people from bigger things, Luthor uses Kryptonite, Superman almost loses, then Superman wins.

Oh, like you didn't know he would.

But Superman is Jesus, apparently. Much symbolism dripping from his cape in this one. Seriously, it's a bit much. I hear your voices, my children, and I will answer. He never actually said that, but it sure seemed like it.

What I liked most: Luthor's beginning in the film; the moment the good guys discovered it was Luthor; and the fact that they decided to completely ignore the fact that Supermen III and IV were ever made. The only thing really wrong with Superman III was the fact that they tried to have a computer plot, with no idea what they were talking about. "Give me that screw!" "It wants to live!" And then Superman IV was just pathetic. (Apparently nuklear power is solar powered.) In this one, at least they had the foresight to use something that wouldn't make them look stupid in the eyes of everyone beyond the age of Atari.
